For those of you looking for an interesting possible final project... look into the work of Native American artist Edgar Heap of Birds...

... how could you create alternative tourist experiences for SF or Santa Cruz?  What places or histories would you choose to reveal?

  1. Obviously I've got art on the brain today, but I think one thing that could be cool in both a tourist sense but also in terms of the togetherness of the city would be one of those community art projects. Like in Los Angeles years back they gave a bunch of artist volunteers life-size angel statues and each artist or team got to decorate it however they wanted, in a way that was specific to them personally or culturally, and they were installed all around the city. As a citizen it was really cool to see all the different art styles and play "Where's Waldo." I love how students are allowed to paint the walls at Porter, as long as they request the space, and I think something like that could be really cool in Santa Cruz. There are some beautiful murals, like the Welcome to Santa Cruz painting on the side of Upper Crust pizza and the agriculture mural on the side of Twice as Nice. I'm not sure what the city's regulations are but it seems like there are a lot of blank walls for a place with such incredible artistic potential and dedicated residents. It would be nice to see those fill up with local art.
