Balmey Alley

I recently just fund out about the amazing murals in Balmy Alley. What makes Balmy alley so special is that it is the most concentrated area of murals in San Francisco. Not only are these murals beautiful and full of creativity,  but they came about during the 80s because of outrage of U.S exploitation of capitalism in Central America. Artist expressed their discontent through these murals, which also help inform the Mission community of the political involvement that the United States had on south of the border. Till this day Balmy Alley has become a source of awareness with subjects on human rights, labor issues, local gentrification and even Hurricane Katrina. The mission district is the most Latino populated of all districts in San Francisco and many of the murals focus on Latinos and Latin America. These murals are full of history and political activism in regards to The Mission Rebels Organization and Los Siete de la Raza.

  1. They're beautiful. It really reminds me of some of the artwork you see here on campus at UCSC, although those I feel have less overall power than some of these. It's important to stand up for what you believe in, no matter how it is that you do so. I think murals are a gorgeous way to do so.
